I just want to post about how lucky we were to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago yesterday, December 6, 2011. Andrew Bird was rehearsing a composition that he will be playing this week as part of a collaborative installation at the museum with Ian Schneller. It was such a unique experience to appreciate art with the company of his music. It felt like even walking up the stairs of the museum was transformed into its own special experience with the presence with his sound. I also have to say that Exhibitions are great! Here are some pictures.

Yeah!!! Erin the chef showed me how to make a curry soup. Here are some pictures of the process. I was very excited to learn from Erin because she lived in Asia for a while and learned how to cook this type of food firsthand. For this soup she used:

3. Garlic - Ajo

Directions:

Sauté ingredients 2 and 3. Then add ingredients 4 to 8. In another pan roast cinnamon, fenugreek, black pepper, coriander, fennel seed and mustard seeds. Next, grind these ingredients with ground turmeric. Once ground, Fry the mixture in olive oil. Add these ingredients to the Sautéd vegetables and mix together. Next, let me mixture cool. Finally, Blend it all and put it back in the pot with the vegetable broth, then add salt and let dissolve.

Fría los ingredientes numero 2 y 3. Luego añada numero 4 a 8. En otro sartén caliente canela, fenogreco, pimienta negra, cilantro, semilla de hinojo, semilla de mostaza. Deje enfriar. Luego muela todos estos ingredientes con cúrcuma. Fríalos en aceite de oliva. Añada estos condimentos a los vegetales y mézclelos. Lícuelos, ponga la sopa con caldo de vegetales en una olla y agregue sal al gusto. Deje reposar para que la sal se disuelva.

Guido Palau Masks

I am working on a piece that is meant to be worn on the head. It is a piece that has taken me a long time and now that I have more time to spend with it I have found so many things that are related to the process. One artist that has inspired this work is the hair stylist, Guido Palau and the masks he made for the Alexander McQueen exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute in the Spring. This time I want to write about this summer. It was a good summer. I had the fortunate opportunity to work with two amazing young artists: Scott A Carter and Gyun Hur. I helped Scott install his work at the Lexington Art League. An installation that gives you a surrealistic experience, changing your perspective of the architecture of its site. These images will give you a better idea.

I also helped Gyun Hur in her installation“I Dreamed Your Utopia” a gorgeous installation at Hotel Florence 11111 S. Forrestville Avenue Chicago at Pullman a beautiful neigborhood in the south of Chicago.

Concrete Utopia, with the support of the Art in Empty Spaces initiative sponsored by Community Board 3 and No Longer Empty, is pleased to announce i am not a good enough feminist, a group exhibition and accompanying publication. In an era of presumed gender equality and celebrated civil rights achievements, have we become complacent and disinterested in the discourse of feminism today? This project seeks to investigate feminism as a historically situated moment and the possibilities and necessities of its contemporary manifestations. As a show, i am not a good enough feminist is the interdisciplinary convergence of artists, writers, activists and intellectuals contemplating their experiences with, preconceptions of, and convictions surrounding feminism. Join us.

The exhibition and publication integrate well-established voices in art and scholarship with emerging young artists in what promises to be an egalitarian, earnest, collective effort to question, confront, and inspire. The book of interviews, original texts, and reprinted materials includes notable contributors Carolee Schneemann, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, and Yvonne Rainer. As a group show, i am not a good enough feminist exhibits the work of 23 artists whose practice engages notions of gender, sexual identity, privilege, socio-economic power, among other themes. Pieces in the exhibition vary in medium such as the video “Sisters: A Hit for a Museum” by Fabienne Audéoud (debuted at Centre Pompidou in 2009), painting by Joan Snitzer of A.I.R. Gallery, ergonomic sculpture by Johana Moscoso, and installation by Lizzy De Vita.

Medium: Screen‐printing, and sewing

Description: For international people there are words that have similar pronunciations while having different meanings. Sometimes we say chicken but what we really want to say is kitchen or vice versa. This work explores what it means to be learning a new language and how we deal with similarities and differences in words. I screen-printed the syllables of the words chicken and kitchen in order to use the shape of the mouth to represent a sound.

From November 2009 to the end of December 2010, I was the Textile Artist in Residence at Lillstreet Art Center Chicago. My statement reflects the experience of this year in the residence program.

Flags Installation. Lillstreet Art Center’s roof. Medium: flag fabric, thread and grommets. 2010-2011

This piece shows my interest in phonics. This can be seen in the flags that are on the roof at Lillstreet. They display the process of using the shape of the mouth to represent a sound. In this case the shapes represent “Lillstreet Art Center Chicago”.

Statement

My work references topics such as phonics, private and public space and emotional prostheses. Aspects of my practice reflect my status as a Colombian immigrant and native Hispanic woman. In my practice I engage in the use of diverse materials ranging from fibers and electronics to lipstick and found objects. I often use these materials in conjunction with traditional art techniques such as drawing, sewing and screen-printing.

The process of learning and improving language by reflecting upon my experience of learning English is the current focus of my practice. Phonics and translation are two primary functions of language that I explore. For example, I am currently printing spoken words by documenting each movement of the mouth in syllable form. Each movement is printed on a surface and language or sounds are preserved as movements of the mouth. In this process I am interested in making language a visible and tangible form. These printed words (lips) appear as musical notes that represent a sound that is interpreted in normal conversation.

In addition to exploring language I have always been interested in personal protection, which in my current practice, is being represented as a form of adaptation. For example, Private space II is a wearable form that has the ability to create a cocoon around the body. Through wearable art I attempt to provide emotional services that transcend functionality and discipline.

Tracing What It Is Remembered

Memories are cross sections of experiences that become unified ideals of situations that we experience as human beings. Most memories inevitably become temporal imprints upon our brain and are lost, skewed, and ultimately take on multiple personalities. For this project the artist traverse Peterson's bridge incurring visual and physical memories throughout the night. In this case the artist place candles in representation of steps and as markers of a path. In this “light” these candles serve as a memory path that can be easily traceable, Ultimately charting and documenting a memory in real time. This piece serve as an analogy for memory and question the definition of memories and what ultimately constructs our interpretation of existence.

A one night event, where emerging international and local artists explore the boundaries of JOY in art with a fusion of sound, performance, and installation. This show reveals how to express release in art practice. A Professional Hip Shaker workshop, mechanized beverage dispenser, experimental cake installation and a limbo streamer will brighten the night with FIESTA and celebration.

There is a temptation to create our own little world in the places where we interact. From this interaction, we develop a relationship to the specific space where the interaction takes place. This interaction at times may become intense, forced and private. This is the moment that we can become The Little Prince (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's most famous children novel published 1943), so we can live or belong to one little world. Our activities can manipulate our attachment to different places. The piece Untitled Relation Project explores the boundaries of our human relationship to space and what we do in these spaces. When experiencing this piece, the audience will have unexpected interpretations of the work, as well as thoughts about space and human relation.

During the opening, the artist will perform the function of the incorporated pieces. For the period of the exhibition the collaboration of the viewers will complement the work. Each member of the Gallery can use Untitled Relations components during office hours. Visitors are invited to reserve a time in the Untitled Relation Project to perform their own activities (see attachments). This reservation can be made online or in person.

Performer Rules
1. The performer cannot wear bright colors such as orange, green or fuchsia. Neutral colors are preferred.

2. The performer will wear a red hood, a red belt and a red boot (provide by the artist).

3. The performer will bring their elements to work. For example: Laptop, sewing machine, pencils, and books.

4. The user is free to remove the boot when entering the door of the restroom, and will be required to re –attach it when they go back to work.

5. The performer is not allowed to leave the Gallery while wearing this boot.

6. The performer should follow the artists instructions using the pieces.

Studioplex 143 is pleased to present dis-placed. A one night show, where emerging international and local artists explore the interplay of space with experimental installations. This show reveals personal concerns about the space and the human relation to it. Explorations include industrial design, anatomical structures, chemical reactions, spiritual inquiry and “socialarchies”.

In the exhibition Gestures of Benevolence, artist Johana Moscoso turns her work into a participatory performance that encourages a communal gesture between the children and their families, the artist, and the audience.

The notion of gesture that she is applying is an action to help two special needs children. The artist is making devices that their mothers need to assist them. However, there are some devices that cannot be made by the artist. Therefore, the audience is invited to make a minimum donation of one dollar.

In return donors can participate in making metaphorical versions of the objects, needed by the children, by connecting the dots on the gallery walls. The donated proceeds will be used to purchase the actual devices for the children.

The money collected is giving to the children’s mothers on Tuesday May 26, 2009 at 6:30 p.m and on Wednesday May 27, 2009 at 7:00 p.m at the gallery. The audience is welcome to be in the gallery when the money is presented. The donor participants are encouraged to leave their information so that they can be continually informed of how their gesture has impacted the lives of these two families.

The two products that the children need; a Hip Reduction Wedge which costs exactly $101.65. The other product will be Braces with silicon inserts that can be removed as the child’s foot grows. These custom fit prostheses cost around $1000.

Multitask Walker

On October 24 in LeFlash I had a successful performance for 5 hours around Castleberry Hill in Atlanta. I used one of my pieces: Multitask Walker”. You can see it on my website http://www.johanamoscoso.com/ in the works of 2008. I will be glad if you want to see my other work in my website as well.
I am very thankful with the people that have helping me in this piece and performance. my wonderful family, Scott Carter, Susan Krause, Ed Bringas, Tiffany Sinnott, Sean L., Danny Paulette, and The Sculpture Department of SCAD.

my MARY KAY protection device for marta

AN ARTIST MEAL IN MARTA

October 9, 6:20 p.m. Today I went with my friend Valentina Vitols to the Marta station, www.itsMarta.com, in order to use "my MARY KAY protection device for Marta" and take photos with her profesional camera. Before entering the N5 - Arts Center Station I opened the suitcase and put it on.

There were few people in the station. I walked to the stairs and went down. I saw a friend while I was recharging my breeze card but he didn't recognize me. While I was recharging my breeze card a women from the station asked me if I needed help. She tried to see my eyes, but it was difficult to see them because they were covered by my hood. I felt like hiding. I walked a situation s a normal person, pretending that nothing happened. This situation was easier for me than for Valentina. I went through the doors and into the station but Valentina didn't because a security woman told her that she couldn't use her camera. That was when I realized it was time to give up.

After leaving Marta I sat on the garden wall and took off "My Mary Kay protection device for Marta," and another security woman asked if we knew that it was prohibited to take pictures in public places, she told us that people had been very afraid of me, because a lot of people told her there was a Middle Eastern or a Mediterranean girl, who was dressed strange and might have a bomb. They must have assumed style of the hood, but nobody took the risk to look at my face and see. The security woman was very kind. She told us how to get permission to take pictures in Marta. We got along with each other and we discussed people’s fear of unusual thing; Every day people report anything they find strange or even silly to the Marta security people. She believed that the people in Marta were mortified.

This experience was like a our flavor sour in my mouth
I did not like that I offended people.
I did not like that I was included in political issues that did not relate to me.
I did not like that I didn’t take full advantage of the Mary Kay name on my suitcase.
I did not lke taking advantage of people’s fears and judgments of Mediterranean people in order to make polemic art

This experience was as good as chocolate (without milk)
- It was good to explore an artwork in a public space.
- It was different the experience to be hiding in a public place. Even though I was really nervous, I sweated and trembling.
-Performance in a public place and in a different country, make you thought that you’ll never know what is going to happen.
- I enjoy to made my MARY KAY protection device for Marta
- I took pleasure of using the body as support for an artwork
- It is motivating to open my work to the public places.

“Menor fertilidad”. (Minor fertility).

Dimensions : Each piece has different dimensions. Medium : Tull net, under wear materials. Each piece was made from a collection of junk food packages in knots; They are the record of all that I ate for one year. Year : 2006. Theme: This work is a reflection of womens in fertility. Women get fatter at their waist because she is getting ready to have a baby. This means that the less they eat the less fertile they are, and the more they eat, more fertile they are. Each piece has a Silver Willendorf venus pendant, one of the most popular art image of fertility.

“Acompañantes afectivos” / Emotionally Affectionate

Year : 2005 This was my thesis Project. It has two parts: the first one is written and the second one is an art work. In the written part there are reflections about art and the art relation with the industrial design throughout the history, the emotional affections, the relationship and the proximity with people with whom one is affectionate or all that means a real home. The second part is a collection of tridimensional pieces called Emotionally Affectionate Companions.

The collection of tridimensional pieces permits reflections about its emblematic characteristics: the concept of luxury, functionality, mechanics and anthropomorphism. They offer to the viewer the possibility to see that art is a flexible net, which can tie together with all postmodern time connotations. This art’s attitude gives a virtue to tying it with different fields, like industrial design. It glimpse a relationship between art combined with industrial design. The “Emotionally Affectionate Companions” functionality provide connections with the objects that we live with; so it seems that the net (art) can weave together with a discipline that worries about usefulness and the physical characteristics of the objects. It is a work of art that lets do reflections about the human relationship with objects and it allows the viewer to discover connections with art. The diversity of all the intensions of this work are focus on the concept of substitute. The substitute of E.H Gombrich. It shows an interest about human affections and about the topic variety that these imply. In these affections we can find relationships and the proximity with the close relatives, the dearest ones in the home (home is a place that means affection), the happiness at home and the comfort that can be established with these people, that is possible only at home.

These pieces mean a collection of emotional affections, memories, comforts, customes, loving acts, persons or routine situations, like walking hand in hand, sleeping between dad and mom or when someone takes care of you when you are sick. The “Emotionally Affectionate Companions” had made as a group; they are a collection of art pieces, or maybe a collection of affections, remembers, commodities, homes, customs, love acts, persons or daily situations like walking hand in hand, sleeping between dad and mom or when someone takes care of you when you are sick, or the restless excite noise of the parents in their child school shows, this ideas born from the Jean Braudillard connotation of collection.
