Artress- an exhibition of contemporary art works by international women artists

From September 25^th – October 16^th 2015 I was part of the show "Artress- an exhibition of contemporary art works by international women artists" at the  Research House For Asian Art （RHAA）in Chicago

Artress presents a selection of outstanding artworks of various medium by seven women artists to address the importance of involvement from women artists in global contemporary art. Included artists are from four continents, among them are well established and celebrated artists, as well as new emerging artists. They are: Corinna Button (b. UK,) He Chengyao (b. China,) Li Xinmo (b. China,) Johana Moscow (b. Colombia,) Sophie Loloi (b. Iran,) Mengli Qi and Dandan Liu (both b. China.) Their practices, exemplified in these works, are not bound to single medium, but to express their thoughts, views, concerns and perspectives, and critically reassess our cultural, social issues and personal history.

Corinna Button paints her large than life self-portrait to gaze and reflect the thoughts of being an woman artist in the U.S. The works of Li Xinmo and He Chengyao are photos of their performance in which they use their own body to speak the unspeakable issues that women face in China in the past and today. Johana Moscow is a performer and fiber artist, her work explores the relationship between migration, gender roles that played under the Colombian culture. Sophie Loloi consider herself a modern nomad who has lived between Iran and the West; her video work explores mystic female body, and Eastern and Western mythology. Dandan Liu and Mengli Qi are up and coming Chinese new generation of artists: Liu’s works satirize the modern norm of how internet age society define and sexualize women and the perception towards “girlie” aesthetics. Qi combines traditional Chinese art form with contemporary themes, questioning life under the gender norms of our society.

The exhibition is curated by Shuting Zheng. The director of RHAA is Qigu Jiang.

One Year in BOLT Residency 2015-2016

BOLT is one of the artist residencies in Chicago. It is a one-year program that offers “the opportunity to engage the Chicago arts community and its public in critical dialogue about contemporary art.”

It offers a studio in the lower level of the Chicago Artist Coalition’s gallery, one SOLO show during the year and professional support by having studio visits from artists, gallerists, curators, and collectors. I am starting this residency on July 15^th. I already got the studio and am moving soon.

I was a HATCH resident, which is another artist-in-residency program that the Chicago Artist Coalition offers. This residency helped my work gain exposure and let me meet wonderful people in the arts. Now that I am starting BOLT I am delighted to be part of a community of talented artists, expand my professional network in the arts and strengthen my presence as an artist in the United States through community dialogue, and access to programming and support.

Showing at 6 Mujeres

August 27^th, 2015 will be the opening of the show “6 Mujeres” at the gallery Otros 360 Grados in Bogota, Colombia. I am absolutely thrilled to show the pieces that I have being working on during this year for this exhibition.

 

One of the goals of the Otros 360 Grados gallery is to address an inequality in the number of women and men exhibiting in and represented by commercial galleries. The show 6 Mujeres in August is a dialog between fiber, drawing and painting from a Latin American, feminine point of view. Aside from me, the show includes Gabriela Lascombes (Argentina), Maria Jose Mir (Chile), Maria Jose Concha (Chile), Nayibe Bechara (Colombia) and Carmenza Kafarela (Colombia.)

Other People’s Pixels (OPP) is a artist-based company that offers affordable exposure to artists. They offer a user friendly interface for artists to create their websites. OPP has a Blog with interviews with outstanding artists who host their websites through OPP.

In Spring I got an interview with Stacia Yeapanis for the OPP blog. She is an artist, educator, and writer. I am very honored to have been interviewed by her. This interview was very interesting because I got to question myself more deeply about my choices, process, and my work.

Artist In Residence at ACRE

I am getting ready to be an artist in residence at ACRE (Artists’ Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions) in Steuben, WI. This is going to be my first artist residency outside of Chicago. I can’t wait to have 100% of my day just making art!!!

ACRE is a “volunteer-run non-profit based in Chicago devoted to employing various systems of support for emerging artists and to creating a generative community of cultural producers.” Out of the 730 applications they received, ACRE offered spots to 80 artists.

I am looking forward to expanding my video performance pieces, such as the project “Dancing Salsa 1 / Bailando Salsa 1,” into an outdoor environment in Wisconsin’s quiet landscape of hills and green open fields. In addition, I will be working on my embroideries.

Epri In the Collection of Solita Mishaan

I am absolutely ecstatic to be part of Solita Mishaan collection. As a Colombian artist that lives and works in Chicago, it is an honor to be recognized by by her.  Solita Mishaan saw my embroidery work during ArtBo 2014. She visited the exhibition El cambio de todo lo que permanence, curated by Jaime Cerón, for the Artecámara division in ArtBO 2014 in Bogota, Colombia.

Solita Mishaan is a fundamental figure in contemporary Latin American Art. As a collector she has invested in Colombian art for many years, and she is the director of the non-profit Fundación MISOL para las Artes in Bogotá. Most recently she won the first prize, 1mer Premio Iberoamericano de Mecenazgo, from the Wealth Advisory Services for the Arts during the art fair ARCO Madrid. In addition, as described in the Artsy website, she is a Member of Latin American and Caribbean Fund, MOMA; trustee of Miami Art Museum (MAM); founding member of the acquisitions committee of Latin American art at Tate London; International Friend of Museo Del Prado, Madrid.

Gallery Representation

I am a featured artist at the gallery Otros 360º. My work will be represented through this gallery only in Colombia.

Otros 360 grados is run by the wonderful galerist team of Angela Royo and Iliana Hoyos. Currently they have of two of my pieces: Neh-moh-KON, Boh-goh-TA- ee- Meh-deh-DJEEN, and Ah-moor.

Document Exhibition at Woman Made Gallery

I got invited by Jessica Cochran to perform the Machera Series 5 during the opening of “Document” exhibition at Woman Made Gallery. It was an extraordinary way to start the new year 2015. My friend and performer Liliana Castellanos and I have noticed that the Machera Series varies every time. The viewer makes it different. It is quite interesting to see that when we performed salsa and merengue, music that makes your body shake, a few viewers try to clap or dance but they notice that others viewers are not doing it too, they stop. It is evident that the performance faces three cultures: South American, North American, and art gallery.

This installment was very special because is the first exhibition at Woman Made Gallery with its new director Claudine Isé and Manager Sydney Stoudmire, who used to be the coordinator. They were very supportive and enthusiastic about the performance.
