JOHART: Gesture of Benevolence May 15, 2009

In the exhibition Gestures of Benevolence, artist Johana Moscoso turns her work into a participatory performance that encourages a communal gesture between the children and their families, the artist, and the audience.

The notion of gesture that she is applying is an action to help two special needs children. The artist is making devices that their mothers need to assist them. However, there are some devices that cannot be made by the artist. Therefore, the audience is invited to make a minimum donation of one dollar.

In return donors can participate in making metaphorical versions of the objects, needed by the children, by connecting the dots on the gallery walls. The donated proceeds will be used to purchase the actual devices for the children.

The money collected is giving to the children’s mothers on Tuesday May 26, 2009 at 6:30 p.m and on Wednesday May 27, 2009 at 7:00 p.m at the gallery. The audience is welcome to be in the gallery when the money is presented. The donor participants are encouraged to leave their information so that they can be continually informed of how their gesture has impacted the lives of these two families.

The two products that the children need; a Hip Reduction Wedge which costs exactly $101.65. The other product will be Braces with silicon inserts that can be removed as the child’s foot grows. These custom fit prostheses cost around $1000.

The artist hopes to raise the $1101.65 through her exhibition and the participation of others. Thank you for your participation and collaboration in the project Gestures of Benevolence.
